These type of illustrations are designed to support or enhance a written context, such a manuscript or article. They're probably the earliest exposure to art we have as children. It's what drew me as a kid to become an artist...well that plus a heathy diet of Saturday morning cartoons, my mom's set of Famous Artist courses, and an ton of comic books.
